Upper East Side

Three words come to mind: Luxury, culture, and tradition. This is classic NYC of old-time fame. Expect gentry, old-world sophistication, culture, and social roots. Think uniformed door attendants in stately old buildings, a sense of heritage, and quiet, tree-lined streets. Feel the old-world sophistication, splash on a healthy dose of a newer and younger vibe, and you have the perfect neighborhood. It’s no surprise that some of the wealthiest NYC residents live here, especially between Park and Fifth Avenues. With Museum Mile adding an artistic feel along with trendy pubs and restaurants on Second Avenue, you’ve found your forever home.

The Upper East Side has consistently maintained its status as a culturally influential and diverse neighborhood in New York City. The area boasts an array of cultural institutions that not only enrich the community but also attract visitors from around the world. Alongside these institutions, the Upper East Side is celebrated for its vibrant mix of dining establishments, nightlife, and educational institutions. Moreover, the neighborhood's diverse range of churches and community centers adds to the rich, cultural mosaic that defines the area. Together, these elements contribute to the ongoing cultural prominence and diversity of the Upper East Side.

This is the epitome of luxury, with prestigious addresses and coveted NYC apartments. The Upper East Side has been home to many famous people, including the Rockefellers, Carnegies, Kennedys, Roosevelts, and Vanderbilts. Residents are spoiled with exclusive shopping on 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, the wide-open green space of Central Park, and views of the East River. The neighborhood is awash with fine-dining restaurants, romantic bistros, trendy boutiques, and museums and art galleries. The housing includes luxury townhouses, opulent condominiums, historic row houses, and chic penthouses.

What to Love

  • The natural beauty and wide open greenspace of Central Park
  • Many fine-dining restaurants, cafes, delis, and boutiques
  • A vibrant nightlife with dozens of bars, lounges, and pubs
  • Many museums and art galleries, including the MET
  • Old-world feel with tree-lined streets and historic architecture
  • Excellent schools and public transportation

Local Lifestyle

This is where the Gilded Age of NYC (1870 – 1900) continues unabated. On the Upper East Side, residents continue to feel as if they are in an old European town but with the sophistication of Paris. The streets remain beautiful and tree-lined with historic architecture and fountains. Pretty flowerbeds pop out around door fronts, and libraries, museums, and art galleries are within walking distance. Daily use of a car is purely optional.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

For excellent European cuisine and an outstanding wine list, go to Restaurant Daniel with its impressive Neo-Classic main dining room, and make sure you try the Maine halibut. If authentic Italian cuisine eaten on a farmhouse table in a room with exposed brick walls lit by a chandelier sounds like your cup of tea, check out Sfoglia. Try the veal Milanese because you only live once. Everybody needs a relaxed neighborhood hangout, and The Alvin Public House fills the bill. They have some great American food there with an “Irish twist.” You’ll be hard-pressed to beat their traditional fish & chips and make sure to add some Guinness on tap.

Fashionistas love the famous Bloomingdale’s for their exclusive designer clothing, handbags, shoes, and jewelry. It’s a fashionista’s mecca. For four stories of French luxury clothing, handbags, accessories, fragrance, fine china, and an art gallery, make a beeline for the legendary Hermès. It doesn’t get any better than that, although Bergdorf Goodman might argue with their vast selection of the most exclusive designers in the world.

Things to Do

Central Park is 843 acres of pure green heaven offering various tours and birding basics, weekly walks in different gardens, tennis courts, picnic areas, and chess games. The smaller 14.9-acre Carl Schurz Park is a bit more secretive and sometimes overlooked due to the grandness of Central Park, but don’t miss its waterfront promenade, walking paths, dog parks, playground, and flower gardens.
