West Village

Those who want a neighborhood that's mellow and laid-back, but never dull.

This charming, historic enclave is right out of a storybook, the way you might dream a big city neighborhood should be. It’s a Hollywood-perfect story about old townhouses and historic brownstones amid cobblestone streets, centered in the heart of NYC, the greatest city in the world. Its meandering, village-like streets defy the “grid system”—that part of NYC that is boxy and square. We’ll have none of that here in the West Village with its quaint, old-world feel. No wonder it’s the city’s most desirable neighborhood. Awash with old trees and trendy shops, this is a bohemian paradise. It's perfect for those who want a neighborhood that's mellow and laid-back, but never dull.
Drenched in history, the West Village has somehow magically retained its old European feel with tree-lined streets, trendy boutiques, quirky stores, and retro chicness. How it manages to do this right in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world remains a mystery. The vibe here is definitely laid-back and community-oriented. You won’t find a ton of office buildings here, but you will find plenty of fine-dining restaurants, great delis, romantic bistros, and culture and art. The housing includes historic brownstones, postwar walkups, colonial townhouses, stylish co-ops, and luxury condominiums.

What to Love

  • The Hudson River Park with river walks and dog parks
  • Fantastic shopping and posh boutiques
  • Charming cafes, intimate bistros, and fine-dining restaurants
  • Cozy wine bars and old speakeasies that are still thriving
  • Art galleries, museums, and many live-music venues
  • Excellent public transportation

Local Lifestyle

If you just “want what you want when you want it,” this is the place to be. Snap your fingers, and you’re strolling down old-world, tree-lined streets. Snap your fingers again, and you’re shopping in the trendiest boutiques and buying the latest designer fashions. So, what do you want? If the answer is “everything,” then you want the West Village. Residents have the best of both worlds, all while appreciating historic architecture, the charm of the Hudson River Park, and the view of the Statue of Liberty.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

For traditional Milanese cuisine, Sant Ambroeus awaits with its dining room of rich red colors, dark wood, and devotion to tradition. If Italian food speaks to your soul, head for Via Carota with their polpette to die for and an impressive wine list. Attention all dessert-first people: Make a beeline right now for Magnolia Bakery and its delicious cakes, brownies, cookies, and ice cream. Make sure you join the Pudding of the Month Club to have desserts delivered right to your doorstep every month.

Everyone knows that nothing is off-limits in NYC. If it’s out there, it’s in the city you’ll find it because the shopping is absolutely endless. For an exciting treat, check out the National Historic Landmark, The Stonewall Inn, the bar and tavern where the 1969 riots began and the gay rights movement took place. This place is pure gold and features live music and entertainment, karaoke, dance parties, and drag shows. Fashionistas will want to make a note to visit Marc Jacobs for fabulous, runway-inspired designer clothing.

Things to Do

For open green space and quiet, check out the Jefferson Market Garden. Entirely maintained by volunteers, it’s a welcome oasis. Chances are good you’ll recognize this place as the venue for Miranda’s wedding in the Sex and the City smash hit series. Art lovers will adore modern and contemporary art at the Whitney Museum of American Art with its continually rotating exhibits, films, performances, and community events.
